Tip #1 – Recruiters work for the client
This means their priority is to the client – which you know as the employer. This is important because they receive jobs on either commission or a retainer.
Recruiters work hard to develop relationships with these companies and their purpose is to bring them key candidates.
Their fee is earned by bringing their clients the type of candidates that fit the qualifications and requirements that the company has asked for.
So, what does this mean for you? Well, if you fall outside the requirements asked for or if you are trying to change industries recruiters may not be that helpful for your job campaign.
Tip #2 – It’s a numbers game
If a position pops up that is perfect for you, they will reach out and engage you. If they don’t have anything that matches your skills, experience and qualifications they won’t be as keen to talk to you.
Now, this doesn’t mean you are a bad candidate. They might like your background, it’s just they don’t have anything to offer at this point.
Most recruiters have sophisticated databases which allow them to quickly look up a shortlist of potential candidates. So, they will call you when they have something that will benefit you both.
Tip #3 – They are in control
When recruiters are working with a company, they are in control of the relationship and information of all candidates being presented. They will be talking directly to the client about each candidate including their experience, needs, salary requirements and so on.
So, when you are working with recruiters, because you don’t have the control over the relationship with the company and other candidates are in the mix you need to be mindful of the information you disclose.
Just as you would be mindful of the information you reveal to a company during an interview, you should also take the same approach with recruiters.
