SHOULD YOU ADD A PROMOTION TO LINKEDIN RIGHT AWAY?

Hi Lisa,

I’ve just got a promotion at work and I’m not sure if I should add that on LinkedIn yet?

Colleagues have said “heck yeah!” but I’m just not sure. Is there a downside to adding it as a new experience?

Jim

Hi Jim,

Congrats on the promotion!

Now, onto your question—should you shout it from the rooftops (aka LinkedIn)?

Your colleagues are all saying, “Heck yeah!” but… I’m going to be that person and say, hold your horses.

Why?

Because life loves to throw curveballs.

Here’s the deal: when you update your LinkedIn with that shiny new title, recruiters and hiring managers will assume you’re off the market.

They’ll move on and won’t bother tempting you with other offers.

But here’s the thing—sometimes that new job isn’t quite what you expected.

Just last week, I had dinner with a friend who was ready to walk out after two weeks because her new role turned out to be, well… a snoozefest.

And I’ve seen clients quit after three months when the job was way below what was promised in the interview.

Classic bait-and-switch.

So, give it 90 days. By then, you’ll know if the job is a keeper, and your new employer will know if they want to keep you.

If you’re still loving it (or at least tolerating it), then go ahead and update your profile.

Your hesitation isn’t just a gut feeling—it’s actually pretty smart. For now, keep your promotion under wraps and let things settle.

Thanks for reading!

Lisa
